Darren Chester has been officially declared the winner of the Federal Seat of Gippsland with the declaration of the poll by the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) on Wednesday.

Divisional Officer John Munn performed the official duties on the steps of the AEC office in Sale in front of a small crowd of staff and interested observers.

In declaring the poll Mr Munn indicated that Mr Chester had secured 53 per cent of the primary vote to win on primaries, with Labor’s Darren McCubbin receiving 31 per cent.

Mr Chester said he was humbled by the result and looking forward to getting on with the job of representing Gippsland in Federal Parliament.

“I would like to congratulate the AEC and its staff for the professional way that they conducted the election and recognise the efforts of all candidates who contested the ballot in good spirit,” Mr Chester said.

“It is a great honour and a privilege to represent Gippsland in Federal Parliament and the work has already started on my second term to make sure we hold the government to account and secure our fair share of funding services and infrastructure.”

“It is very humbling to receive such strong support from Gippslanders and I’m looking forward to representing the region’s interest to the best of my ability.”
